The Freelancer Network

We’re building an online network, resource hub, and open marketplace for creative freelancers in Canada.

To begin, we developed a Freelancer Survey to get data and perspectives from the source!

Our ambitious goal is to get 1,000 completed surveys from across the country to help us properly frame this initiative.

So far, we’ve received 200+ responses and are seeing many similarities and trends.

What we heard.

More than half of the respondents did not choose to be freelancers.

They’re currently freelancing because they were laid off, restructured, or need different work arrangements due to family commitments.

The lack of health care and other benefits makes the prospect of freelancing daunting.

And, the prospect of having to hustle and secure constant work opportunities, and do the associated admin work like scoping and invoicing.

Being a freelancer often feels like a singular experience.

This lack of community and connection takes a heavy toll on mental health and well-being. There’s a feeling of being lost, without a support system.

Additional support and resources are needed now more than ever.

Many freelancers want access to resources, training, and other services to help them manage the additional responsibilities of being a freelancer (like taxes!).

There’s a shift in priorities and what’s ultimately important to people. Thanks,

All respondents rated their happiness level higher than their feelings of financial security being a freelancer.

Work isn’t as easy to find as it used to be. And, most of it is available in the big cities.

And, last but not least many of them want support positioning themselves in the market and be given access to job opportunities.

However, there is hope

The freedom and control that come with freelancing were unanimously shared among respondents. Specifically, the ability to:

  1. Pick the types of clients and work

  2. Work remotely and define office hours

  3. Travel and work from other locations

  4. Not have to deal with all of the politics typically associated with agency life

Some Frequently Asked Questions

The Network

  • Great question. Services like Fivrr and Communo are talent marketplaces built to make money by connecting creative talent with marketers or organizations looking for freelance talent. These companies are designed to make money from connecting paying companies with their network of freelancers. In their model, talent is a commodity that’s being sold. This is an antiquated profit-lead model that doesn’t benefit the freelancer community. Their profits are made either based on the transaction or a monthly subscription fee. That’s not what we’re developing. We think those models aren’t effective or valuable resources.

  • Unlike other freelancer networks, we are designing everything with the unique needs of the freelancer first. What do they need to succeed? How do needs vary across regions in Canada? What’s working and what isn’t? This is why we’re conducting a national survey.

  • All creative freelance professionals in Canada.

  • Currently the network is self-financed and supported entirely by our agency. However, we’re in the process of attempting to secure government funding. Our preference is to avoid outside private investments to ensure focus and control.

  • We’re not looking to make money on the backs of freelancers. Other marketplaces do that and we think it’s exploitative. After our launch, we will begin to roll out services designed to help clients and our community succeed. Until then, we will be supported by our personal investments and any outside funding that we’re able to secure.

  • Not being profit-led ensures that the focus is on freelancers and areas where we can help build and foster the most value. It’s also why we’re self-funding this initiative, rather than taking money from a VC or private investor.

  • Membership is free for all freelance professionals in Canada. In the future, there could be optional costs (i.e., group health plan, training, etc), but ultimately we’re looking to build something for members that improves their lives.

  • Ah! The million-dollar question. We’re in the early planning phases and the survey is the first step to validate our idea and better understand the needs of Canadian freelancers. Hopefully, it will also help us secure a grant to build what freelancers actually want! More details are coming soon as we build a roadmap… and juggle client work!

  • This will all depend on what we hear from the national survey. And, pending government funding. 💰Some early ideas include training, networking, a group health plan, preferred pricing for co-working spaces, and even a group retirement saving plan.

  • We believe that greatness is in the agency of others–meaning we know that we won’t solve this on our own. We’re excited to get direct feedback from the community and co-develop ideas, based on immediate need. And no, we’re not worried about someone stealing the idea. In fact, if someone steals the idea and makes a stronger product, we’d be thrilled. We’re doing this because we believe there’s no suitable Canadian support system for freelancers.

  • We hope this will be national. We have long arms. :) Our goal is to be inclusive regardless of the location Canadian freelancers choose to work from. We have no immediate plans for local chapters but will explore this as we finalize and evolve the idea.

The Survey

  • With continued mass layoffs in the creative sector and few resources for these individuals, we feel an obligation to help. Also, we’ve been freelancers… ones that had to support families too.

  • We plan to use them to validate or adjust our approach for the beta launch of our service. Going forward, we plan to create an ongoing dialogue with the community to allow their evolving needs to dictate how we build and scale the platform.

  • Yes! We plan to publish our survey findings once we reach our goal of 1000 submissions. 😳

Job Opportunities

  • Yes, absolutely. However our focus is to provide a much broader reaching resource for freelancers, rather than just a job board service. Also, we plan to leverage our freelancer community while developing this network. So, if you have specialized skills that could help us design, build and deploy this platform, feel free to reach out. We’re eager to work with you: play@avclub.agency

  • We’ve already tapped into our existing freelance network to help with writing technology whitepapers, creating social content, building websites, and media planning. We hope to offer more opportunities to support our agency in the future. And, we’ve just hired two marketing apprentices for the summer. Our next hire will be a Digital Marketing Manager. Details coming soon.

  • We do! Both of us are strategists by experience and title. Let’s face it, without a good plan (and planner), how effective can the work really be? :)

The Future

  • To be honest, it’s impossible to predict the future, but we’re seriously concerned. Enough that we’re investing our own time and resources to help address what we believe will be a serious employment issue in the years ahead.

What we do know is that large organizations are continuing to cut their workforce to improve quarterly results and protect shareholder value. This is flooding the market with talent. And some of these individuals have little support and now need to fend for themselves for the first time. We also know that some of the best creative talent in our country is now freelance. And the goal of this platform is to provide support to this community and ensure that this talent succeeds..

  • Good question. Freelancers across the country are optimistic about the future, but they also share our concerns. We’ve heard this across the feedback collected in our national survey. We’ve also been freelancers and have deeply felt the ebbs & flows that come with it. We’re here to try and make sure it does get better for this ever-growing club of talent.

Wanna Join the Club?

  • The only thing we love more than community building is enthusiasm. We’ll be looking for support in the coming months and really appreciate the offers. We’ll be in touch! In the meantime, sharing our survey widely so we can get the volume, diversity in POVs, and national representation is immensely valuable!

  • Yes. If you’re interested in joining our pre-launch beta community, you can do so here.

  • Absolutely, here’s the link to the survey. We’re excited to hear from you
